A Florida Dad Threw His 5-Year-Old Daughter Off a Bridge to Her Death
Five-year-old Phoebe Jonchuck died early Thursday morning after her father threw her off the side of a bridge, Florida police say.
Jon Jonchuck Jr., 25, was allegedly speeding down the highway at nearly 100 miles per hour. A police officer saw him and pulled him over. Jonchuck then got out of the car and walked toward the officer, and the officer drew his weapon. Jonchuck said something inaudible, retrieved Phoebe from the car, tossed her into Tampa Bay, and drove off.
Authorities believe Phoebe was alive when thrown from the car. She fell 62 feet into frigid waters just after midnight and was recovered 1.5 hours later. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Jonchuck had full custody of little Phoebe, but had multiple run-ins with police over domestic violence against Phoebe's mother, Michelle Kerr. Police did not find any evidence he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. "I've been doing this job for 29 years, and I don't even know what was going through this guy's mind," St. Petersburg Police Chief Tony Holloway said at a press conference. He has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault on an officer, fleeing and eluding police, and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle on a law enforcement officer, WPTV reports.
Little Phoebe is being remembered today as a girl with a cheerful disposition and a bright future.
