Emily Blunt on why the world needed a Mary Poppins sequel
Emily Blunt is certain that her latest film, Mary Poppins Returns, is just what the world needs right now.
In an interview withThe Sunday Times, the actress emphasised the importance of the Disney sequel.
"It's incredibly hopeful," the 35-year-old said. "I didn't watch the original while shooting, but it's seared into my memory - this idea of her as this incredibly unsentimental character who swept into their lives and made it all right. I found a great comfort in that as a child."
It may have been 53 years since Robert Stevenson's original Mary Poppins swept onto our screens with an umbrella to hand but the musical is still the spoonful of sugar audiences crave.
"The world is fragile right now, and people need a film like this," Blunt added.
The upcoming film is set in 1934, during the time of the Great Depression, where "there was profound need of, literally, hope falling from the skies".
The Banks family's children, Jane and Michael, are all grown up. But when Michael suffers a family tragedy, Mary swoops in to give a helping hand.
Shot in the grounds of Buckingham Palace, the sequel is "emblematic of England" but Blunt's portrayal of Poppins is far from Julie Andrew's interpretation.
"I took my version from the books, where she's really eccentric," the 35-year-old revealed. "Batty. Vain, completely imperious and weird."
Though when given the role, the actress admitted that she was "frozen with fear".
