How to Raise a Nobel Laureate: Give Your Kids Chocolate Milk
A letter published in 'Practical Neurology' analyzes milk consumption data and discovers a link between drinking milk and winning Nobel Prizes.

MONDAY, Jan. 14, 2013 —Kids are always looking for an excuse to drink chocolate milk. Adults might want to consider doing the same. Research, published in a letter toPractical Neurology, claims that milk, as well as chocolate, could explain the success rate of certain countries when it comes to winning Nobel Prizes.
Previous research, published in a 2012 edition of theNew England Journal of Medicine, showed a strong correlation between how much chocolate a nation ate per capita, and how many Nobel Prize winners they had. Scientists attributed this relationship to the brain-boosting powers of flavonoids, ingredients commonly found in chocolate.
Given the frequent combination of milk and chocolate, authors of thePractical Neurologyletter decided to compare a country’s milk consumption with the number of Nobel Prize laureates.
After examining 2007 data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on per capita milk consumption, the authors discovered that Sweden led the world in per capita milk-drinking (340 kilograms a year, or 750 pounds) and how many Nobel Prize winners they claimed per 10 million people (33).
Switzerland, second to Sweden, averages 300 kilograms (661 pounds) of milk drunk per capita, and has produced 32 Nobel Prize winners.
Conversely, China has the lowest per capita milk consumption (25 kilograms, or 55 pounds) of any country studied and the fewest number of Nobel laureates in its population.
The United States drinks approximately 250 kilograms (551 pounds) of milk a year and 10 laureates per 10 million people. Canada had 6 winners per capita, and consumes 207 kilograms (456 pounds) of milk per year.
Authors of the letter came to the conclusion that, like the brain boosting flavonoids found in chocolate, the high amount of vitamin D in milk may also improve brain power.
“So to improve your chances of winning Nobel prizes you should not only eat more chocolate but perhaps drink milk too: or strive for synergy with hot chocolate,” concluded the authors.
