Increase your pace
What:A programme that divides sprinting into 5 components - reaction, acceleration, explosive power, quickness and agility and shows you how to dance to the tune of a speed merchant.
Why:There's no substitute for pace on any playing field. But if you think explosiveness isn't something your sport requires, think again. Whether you swing a golf club or a cricket bat, kick a football, move a bar-bell or a mountain bike, if you can do it quicker and with more authority and power, you'll do it better.
How:The programme is the creation of Tom Shaw who is a strength-and-conditioning coach, specialising in speed development, for professional footballers, rugby players ,NFL players and just about anyone looking to get faster. If he can improve the performance of already finely honed athletes, imagine what he can do for a dull blade like you.
When:We've rounded up Shaw's best drills for you to do as an addendum to your usual routine. Tack a few exercises onto the beginning or end of your regular workout, or make one training day each week a speed day, and start feeling the most important benefit of all: pace.
